How do I "do" something in chat without the ":" coming up after my name?

Sometimes you may wish to "do" something in chat - for instance, smile, or some other action - and not use the text based emoticons that are commonly used for the smilies (For example :) ). To do this in Secondlife is fairly easy, just type "/me (Action)" in the chat bar - this will replace the "/me" with your avatar name but without the ":" between your name and the action you want to perform. This is chat based actions only, please note that your avatar will not perform the action in world, it will just be as words on the screen.

So, for instance, to have "Sorka Nemeth smiles fondly at Fortyniner" appear in open chat, I would actually type "/me smiles fondly at Fortyniner" in the chat bar.

How do I create a landmark ?

When you are wandering around the huge Second Life universe, you may come across places you would like to visit again, or show a friend - and at this point you need to make a landmark if you are ever to stand a chance of finding it again. This is done by clicking the world menu tab on the bar at the top of your Secondlife window, and then choosing the "Create landmark here" option (about 5th one down) this will then put a landmark into your inventory which you can use to return by seleting it in your inventory, right clicking and selecting teleport.

Some sims may not allow you to take land marks, or teleport into the spot you have chosen. There is a way to make your landmark a beacon you can follow to get to your destination and I will explain that in a different FAQ.

I keep seeing all these little coloured balls around, what are they and what are they for?

The coloured balls (or sometimes coloured cushions) are what are called "poseballs" and they are the means most commonly used to animate your avatar. To use them, simply right click the ball/object that you wish to interact with, then select the action (normally found just off centre to the left of the pie) "Sit here", "Dance", "eat" and "love" are all fairly common actions.

The poseballs can be "colour-coded" to give a clue as to which sex avatar should use them, although if you chose to animate 2 avatars of the same sex on a set of poseballs designed for mix sex use, it doesn't really matter. Depending on the activity it may just look a little odd.

How do I get stuff out of a box?

First, you need to be in a location that does NOT have a box inside a red circle on your top toolbar where the name of the land is featured. If you see the box inside the red circle, that means you are in a place where you can't build or drag items from your inventory to the ground and you will need to go somewhere else to open your box.

When you have found somewhere you can rezz items, look for the item you just bought and are trying to unpack, it most likely will be in your Objects folder inside your Inventory.

Then you drag the item out of your inventory and onto the ground. Right click on the box and choose Open from the pie menu. This will bring up a pop-up box asking if you want to copy and wear or copy to your inventory. I would recommend copy to your inventory (you can always wear it when you are done). This will make a folder in your inventory named whatever the box was named (for example: Soft Wool Jumper).

Finally, right click the box again, and take the box back into your inventory. You can now check your inventory for the folder and wear your new item.
